This
story is particularly touching to me.
A long
time ago my oldest brother Jim, gave my mom a copy of 'Between
Nothingness and Eternity' by the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Jim was a
good guitarist and was known to spend alot of time deciphering John
McLaughlin's guitar riffs from this album. She cherished it and
labeled it on the cover with Jim's name and date in which he gave
it... this album of course came down into my hands much later...
I
was floored by its musical force and.. if you've never heard it,
this live album is absolutely amazing and ranks still as one my
all time favorites. John McLaughlin became one of my guitar idols
after i discovered this band.
Jump
to the present now : 1992/1993?.
Billy
Cobham, famed Jazz/Rock drummer (who played w/ Mahavishnu in those
years) is playing HOB-NO with his trio. I was mixing House sound
for the local jazz/rock fusion band Woodenhead, who opened the show.
I brought
my mother's copy of the album with me.. and when the moment was
right- sometime after the soundcheck in the afternoon, i approached
Mr. Cobham- i told him the story of how this album had filtered
down to me.. son to mom to son... he seemed very touched.
I had
him autograph 'to Katie'.. he was very kind and did so with no hesitation
at all.
It
was wonderful to return her the album, now with two inscriptions
on the cover.. one from Jim to her and the other from Billy Cobham
to her... SWEET. When i showed it to her, she laughed and just fell
out. I know it touched
her in a very special place.
